Higher risk of hearing loss with SLE

A new piece of research has found that lupus patients have a significantly higher risk of hearing loss than people without lupus.

Researchers took data from 17 studies with a total of 1,326 people taking part. 635 people had lupus and 681 people did not have lupus, 27% of the lupus patients were diagnosed with hearing loss compared to 2% of the group without lupus. The hearing loss was mainly in the low frequency range (a man's voice, drum, thunder etc).

Age at disease onset, lupus nephritis and hydroxychloroquine use are also associated with lower hearing levels and possible early hearing loss.
